THAI Airways International (THAI) is adjusting its
10-year fleet upgrade strategy, which is rolling out from this year to 2017, to cope with the frequent and drastic rise in oil
price.

President, Mr Apinan Sumanaseni, said: “At the moment, fuel constitutes about 30 to 35 per cent of our total operation cost. So with the current unpredictable global oil price situation, we have to be more careful with our strategy.”

He said the airline would have to reconsider whether to stick with the strategy of adding 65 new aircraft within the next 10 years. The airline has a fleet of 83 aircraft now.

The 10-year plan was announced in September last year when oil prices were much lower than the current record of US$117 per barrel.

Citing the rising oil price, THAI increased its air fares on all domestic and international routes by three to five per cent on March 29. The airline is also considering adjusting air fares again in October.

From April 28, the airline’s fuel surcharge on international routes will be increased by 20 to 28 per cent; and by between 100 baht (US$3.17) and 750 baht for domestic routes.
