Biggest Mardi Gras yet say organisers

Organisers of this year's 30th anniversary gay and lesbian Mardi Gras parade in Sydney are saying that it is the biggest and best the city has ever seen.

Last night over 10,000 people from all over Australia and overseas paraded in Oxford Street.

Amongst them were representatives from the Defence Force Gay and Lesbian Group for the first time marching with approval.

"This is a huge thing for Defence and it shows the wider community that Defence is a gay-friendly environment," said Stuart O'Brien from the group.

Police report that only 29 arrests were made and orgaisers say that more than 300,000 people watched the parade.
Marcus Bourget, Mardi Gras organiser said that the night had been a massive win for the city and praised the police presence.

"We raise $45 million for the New South Wales economy each year - we're a fully self-funding festival - the state has not given us a cent," he said.
